Tutorial:

Making new maps for BW
----------------------
-BASIC-

This tutorial teaches you to build an arena on a scene.
For that to happen, you must use a blank or an existing scene defined within BW.rte.
To make a new custom terrain or a new scene with custom backgrounds,
see the "Making New Maps for BW -ADVANCED-.txt" file.

Contents:

1. Starting off
2. Building your arena
3. Wrapping it up
4. Sharing and recieving

Requirements:
-------------
You have a registered version of Cortex Command.
We will be using the scene editor for this.

Note:
Map = Scene = Map
BW = Ballistic Weapons = this mod = BW.rte

===============
1. Starting off
===============

Ok, so first you need to decide what you're gonna make.
If dont have a clue what you want to make, then think
whether you want a large map or a small map.
Or if you dont know that either, then just pick a
random terrain and build an arena on it.

There are several terrains available to you that BW offers
and also the ones that come with CC by default.

======================
2. Building your arena
======================

Okay, so now that you have an idea what you want (whether its "small
arena with lots of jump pads" or "Ihavenoidearandom-type arena").

We'll be using the scene editor to build it so make sure youre registered on CC.
Here we go:

1. Run Cortex Command

2. At the main menu, press "Game Editors" and hit "Scene Editor".

3. Now you get a small option box with some buttons.

4. From the dropdown box, choose your terrain. ONLY select the terrain that has the BWTER_ prefix.

5. Then his "Load".

6. Now youre in the editor. You can start building the arena and make it as crazy as you want.

-----HINT SPREE!!!-----
So now you made it this far, good work.
If you want some examples how to build arenas, study the ready maps included with the mod.
Some stuff to remember and hints:

.Try to keep the amount of interactive objects (barrels, fueltanks, crates)
no more than 15 pieces. 20 is absolute maximum.
This is because too many of them will slow your game.
Especially if youre on a low-end pc. Because an arena is for competive fighting,
reducing slowdowns is a good idea to preserve fluid gameplay.

.You can have any number system modules though, but dont over do it.
Usually keep them down to 30 or less.

.Design and build spots reserved for special modules like weapon/bomb dispensers or teleports.

.Designing a map beforehand make it easier to build it when youre at it.
Draw a rough overview of the map or write down a general idea if youre going for something special.

.Try not to make too many long and tight shafts using lots of straigth bunker modules
to create a loooongcat tunnel. If youre making a long tunnel, try to have some trenches or exits,
extra rooms. Also making a tunnel wide and tall is very recommended if its going to a long one.

.Cover is important in BW, so use the small bunker modules in "Bunker Bits" to like
metal/concrete crates around the map to offer ability to take cover behind them.

.Decorate your map with bunker bits. Use ladders, stairs, small details,
concrete boxes and such to make your map more pretty and more fun to play on.

.Think before you place Jump Pads. These things can also render a route to be a
oneway only so make sure you dont accidently make a jump pad throw a
player somewhere where there is no way out. (Unless its a deathpit. Hint hint. >:))

.Save often while building. You can never know when the evil blue screen of death might
nuke your computer so its always good to be prepared. Saving is explained below at "3. Wrapping it up"

.If you want the doors to be neutral and not open for anyone or have
actors or other objects belong to nobody, you can go to BW.rte/Scenes and find your scene
there as [NameOfMap].ini and use notepad to find and replace all "Team = 0" and "Team = 1"
into this: "Team = -1". (-1 is neutral team, 0 is red and 1 is green)
NOTE! You can do this once youve saved your map atleast once and closed CC.
Dont do it while youre editing the map. AFTER it. Remember that.

-----HINT SPREE ENDED-----

=================
3. Wrapping it up
=================

Ok, now that you've made your map, you need to save it. Open the pie menu and select "Save".

First MAKE SURE you Do NOT save the map with the same name as the terrain.
Now that you made an arena of it, give it a name BW_[My Arena/Map Name] (without brackets).
Do note the changed prefix from BWTER_ to BW_.

NOTE: BWTER means BW Terrain, so its just the empty map with only the ground and background.

After pressing save, here, you must be sure it is saved in "BW.rte/Scenes" folder.
If it says something about overwriting, say "Yes". This usually happens when you update your map.

You can always go back to the scene editor and load your created map and do any changes you want to it.
Then save and overwrite the old file. Easy as that.

-----
Done!
-----

If you wish to edit your maps, simply load them through the Scene Editor and do any changes you must.
Find your map on the list and hit "Load".

Changing existing maps:

If for some reason you might want to tweak the official maps:

1. Load them through the Scene Editor

2. Make changes

3. Save them and overwrite the old file.
(Remember to backup the old file if you see it necesary.)

========================
4. Sharing and recieving
========================

:SHARING PART:

To share your maps with others, all you need to do is this:

1. You have already created some maps and you want to share these with other players.

2. Go to BW.rte and put the following files from these folders in a zip/rar/other package
to compress them so sending them would be easier over the internet as they will be
in one pack and save space.

-BW.rte/ --> Scenes.ini

-BW.rte/Scenes/ --> Entire folder

3. After compressing them, send/upload them over the internet where ever you want and
post a link on the forums or to a specific person you were intending to give your maps.

:RECIEVING PART:

You found some cool BW scenes made by others and you want them. Heres how to plug them in:

1. Download the file (assuming they packed it up using the instructions of ":SHARING PART:")

2. Extract the file (if its compressed, which it should be) into a
DIFFERENT location than BW.rte, DO NOT toss those files there yet.

3. Now you should have these items after extraction:

-Scenes.ini file,

-and "Scenes" folder.

4. First take a look at the "Scenes" folder and see what the new maps are called
and put the maps you want in the BW.rte/Scenes folder. This will add the new maps.
Remember the names of the maps you just threw in.

5. Now open the downloaded Scenes.ini file in notepad or similar and open the
Scenes.ini inside BW.rte aswell with notepad.

6. Now youre having 2 different Scenes.ini files. One is the downloaded one and
contains the paths for the new maps. The other one is where we need to move those paths to.
You must now take the code of the new maps from the downloaded Scenes.ini
(remember what their names were) and copy those lines at the bottom of the other
Scenes.ini which is inside BW.rte.

7. I hope that wasnt too confusing, but if you did it right, save the Scenes.ini file
you added the new paths to and run CC. The new maps should be now there.
